My Life With Horses: The Story of Jack Juby MBE Master of the Heavy Horse edited by Alison Downes and Alan Childs

Jack Juby (1920-2004) had a remarkable gift, an ability to work with heavy horses that was almost uncanny.  From his Norfolk boyhood up to his death, his passion for horses never waned.

Born at Reymerston, Norfolk, Jack’s reputation spread far and wide as a horseman of enormous character and skill.  His particular pride and joy were his beloved ‘heavy horses’, and especially Percherons.  When Jack received an MBE in the 2002 New Year’s Honours, ‘for services to heavy horses’, it was as if it had been given to the whole of the heavy horse fraternity.

Set in Norfolk, the story is told largely through Jack’s own words as transcribed from a series of taped interviews taken by his daughter, co-editor of this book.  These personal reflections cover many aspects of country lore and farming life, particularly in those years when horses were still in common use on farms.  Though life for the farm labourer was hard, Jack’s sense of humour, wisdom and kindness shine through on every page.

This book is a tribute to a ‘Master of the Heavy Horse’, and it will be greatly enjoyed by all those who love horses and the countryside as it used to be.

Hardback.
