This book covers the teaching of young horses in-hand, preparing them for the day that they will come under saddle and rider. The book is based on the author’s personal experiences and offers a refreshing, gentle approach to the education and training of horses.

In the first part of the book the author discusses horse psychology as it relates to training to help the reader understand something of the nature of horses generally before embarking on the practicalities of educating a young horse.

The second part of the book presents a logical sequence of training in which the pupil is carefully taught the necessary stable manners, introduced to the headcollar and bridle, to lungeing and to the basics of long reining. The author shows that all this can be accomplished with patience, gentleness and understanding and the result is a horse that is happy in its work and thoroughly prepared for backing.

Much of the advice contained in this book can be used in the reschooling of older horses who need to go back to basics, especially those who have spoled through mishandling.  

Easy to read and simple to understand this book deserves a place on every horseman's bookshelf.
