Stef Eardley, an experienced instructor, and Stephanie Bateman, an equestrian journalist and horsewoman, have combined forces to provide an introduction to horsemanship for those starting to ride or already taking lessons.
The book includes everything the new rider needs to know, from where to ride and what to wear to early lessons, hacking out, and even competing. Topics covered include: how to behave around horses, and understanding their basic nature; mounting and dismounting - getting on and off; the basic position in the saddle and how to hold the reins; how to stop, go, and steer; walk, trot (rising/sitting), and canter; the jumping position and polework; how to hold a whip, changing from left to right; the value of lungeing; hacking, opening gates, galloping, road work, coping with traffic; and riding etiquette.
There are also useful off-horse exercises for warming up before you ride, as well as for stretching and strengthening the appropriate muscles.
Thoughout the book there are photos and diagrams that add clarity to the text and provide visual background information for anyone new to the sport.
