The Percheron draft horse breed was introduced into America in the middle of the 19th Century. By the early part of the 20th Century Percherons had become the predominant draft horse in America, outnumbering all other breeds combined by a margin of more than 3 to 1.


The Percheron Horse in America starts with a brief history of the origin of the breed, and of the controversy that still surrounds that origin. It then traces the growth of the breed in America, and of the history of the American Percheron Association, from the mid 19th Century to the close of the 20th Century. The many colourful personalities who were involved in this fascinating story come to life again in both the text and in the 100 vintage photographs which depict those days.

There was a period of time in our history, within the memory of many still living today, when the horsepower came only from horses. It was then that the Percheron breed that was dominant – the breed of choice. It was during those years (1900 – 1940) that the Percheron horse provided the power to build and feed America!
