The equine digestive system has been tested in modern times by the effects of expansion in horse ownership and the often frantic demands of competition. This desire for higher levels of performance has meant that there is a greater need to evolve feeding regimens that improve fitness, win competitions and generate success. To meet these demands the feed producers provide a variety of feed stuffs for all levels of performance.

The horse is unimportant in terms of world economics, however, and this means that research into equine diseases is often not possible. The widening base of our knowledge is therefore restricted by practical considerations but we already know enough to help deal with many of the problems we face.

Peter Gray MVB MRCVS trained at University College, Dublin and has been in practice since 1964 specialising in thoroughbreds, competition horses and breeding stock. His first book Soundness in the Horse is already regarded as a classic work and his writing demonstrates his deep knowledge of and genuine concern for the horses in his care.
