Dawn Westcott is the author of best-seller, Wild Pony Whispering, which tells the real-life story of Monsieur Chapeau, a wild orphaned moorland foal, and how he helped us to better understand and tame the wild ponies of Exmoor National Park - and highlight their plight as an endangered breed. Dawn has twice stood International Horse Agility world champion (2011 and 2012) with her moorbred Exmoor pony stallion Hawkwell Vesuvius 'Bear' and specialises in working with equines at liberty. Dawn and her husband Nick are also founder members of the Moorland Exmoor Pony Breeders Group (MEPBG) and founders of the Exmoor Pony Club, Moorland Exmoor Foal Project and the Holtball Exmoor Pony Stud (Herd 11). The Westcott family has lived and farmed on Exmoor for over 500 years. After a career in glossy magazine publishing in London, Dawn (née Williams) moved to the WestCountry and in 2008 married Nick Westcott. They are committed to the preservation of the Exmoor ponies of Exmoor National Park and encourage the use of positive, trust-based handling and training of the ponies which endeavours to understand the language of the horse. It was through working to build trust with their Exmoor ponies that Nick and Dawn realised that understanding, welfare and treatment of the free-living Exmoor ponies - and indeed all equines - could be improved immeasurably.
